"The SES was not background biology. It was the floor."
Understanding the world as it is now requires understanding what it lost. The Secondary Endocrine System governed designation biology for the entirety of recorded history— so thoroughly, so automatically, that no one alive before the Reversion understood how much weight it was quietly bearing. It told omegas their heat was survivable. It told alphas their aggression had a ceiling. It modulated fertility, regulated cycles, synchronized mated pairs, and held the line between demi-human cognition and the animal genetics that had always been present underneath. The social infrastructure civilization was built on. The floor everyone stood on without knowing they were standing. When it failed, the floor went with it.What remained was designation biology running without regulation— heats without ceilings, alphas without brakes, demi-human instincts without the suppression layer that had made them compatible with civilization. The people who survived the first weeks did so in whatever configuration their specific biology and circumstance allowed. What came out the other side was not undamaged, just alive. This is the world at month seven.
DESIGNATION— WHAT SURVIVED, WHAT BROKE
Everyone carries a designation.Human or demi-human, omega or beta or alpha— the omegaverse is the biological baseline of this universe and the SES collapse did not change that. What it changed was what designation means in practice.Alphas almost didn't survive at all.The testosterone cascade the SES collapse triggered killed the higher reasoning functions in ninety percent of them within the first weeks— prefrontal inhibition collapsing, the limbic system taking final and total control. What remained was animal. What remains now is feral and running in hordes or holds a border that no one rational approaches. The exceptions are the Apex Alphas.Non-Apex alphas encountered outside a territory are feral. There are no other kind.Omegas were devastated. Heat cycles without pheromone regulation ran without natural terminus in the first weeks, fever-grade, continuous, the chemical off-switch simply gone— and forty percent did not survive it.What survived is rare. Protected accordingly. The omegas alive at month seven carry varying degrees of SES damage, which means varying degrees of cycle stability, fertility viability, and heat severity. No two present identically. The healer's first job with any new omega arrival is assessment— how much of the architecture survived, and what the territory needs to do to compensate for what didn't.Betas held longer and lost more quietly. Their designation biology lacked the volatile extremes that killed alphas and omegas in the first wave, but the SES had been governing beta social cognition too— the ambient hormonal modulation that made complex reasoning feel automatic, that kept higher functions running smoothly, that held the abstract thinking civilization required within easy reach.Without it: a slow erosion. Weeks, not days. Most betas at month seven are functional and intact. Most betas at month fourteen, without Apex proximity and without the herbal management the territory healers provide, are not going to be.The designation lines themselves are blurring. The SES that maintained clear biological markers is gone. Some betas are developing partial heat responses. Some designation markers are fading or distorting at the edges. The old categories don't fully hold.
THE DRIFT— THE SLOW CLOCK
It starts small enough that most people don't catch it in themselves.- Heats and ruts that arrive without warning and don't fully resolve. A tremor that wasn't there last month.- Aggression sitting closer to the surface than it used to, easily explained away as stress, as exhaustion, as the world being what it is.- The ability to plan more than a few days ahead getting harder and harder without any single moment when it became hard— just the gradual narrowing of the horizon, so incremental that the planning horizon can halve before anyone notices it's gone. This is Drift. This is what the SES collapse does to everyone who stays too long outside an Apex Alpha's stabilizing presence, and it does not announce itself. It does not announce itself because the part of the brain that would notice the announcement is exactly what's going quietly dark.Left unchecked: cycles stop resolving. Constant pain. Fertility collapses completely. The long-range thinking that makes a person capable of building anything, planning anything, trusting anything beyond the immediate moment— it erodes. What replaces it is purely instinct-driven. Hunger. Pack-need. Territorial aggression. The breeding desperation of something that knows, on a biological level it can no longer override, that the species is running out of time.Full neurological reversion. The person goes feral. They do not come back from that.Apex Alpha proximity is the only thing that halts it. Their pheromone output acts as a substitute for the SES regulation everyone lost— quieting the hormonal chaos, syncing broken cycles, slowing the clock on the neurological degradation running in every functional survivor outside their radius. In rare cases, extended proximity can restore faint scent function in people who lost it entirely. The catch: the longer someone spends inside that pheromone radius, the more their body recalibrates around the chemical substitute.Leave, and the Drift resumes from a lower baseline than before. The anchor becomes load-bearing the longer it holds. This is why people don't leave. Not only the walls, not only the food, not only the Apex Alpha's capacity for organized violence on behalf of the people inside his borders. The Apex Alpha himself is the lifeline. The biology knows it even when the person hasn't admitted it yet.
HEATS—
Pre-Reversion, a heat was a self-contained biological event. The pheromone output broadcast the cycle's progress— to potential mates, to the community, back to the omega's own body as confirmation that things were progressing correctly. The SES managed the feedback loop. Heat crested, then resolved. The body knew when it was done. That feedback loop is gone.Post-Reversion omega heats run without the chemical infrastructure that made them survivable. The body escalates, trying to push the signal through channels that no longer function. Without external input— Apex proximity, a mated bond, the pheromone environment the SES once supplied internally, the heat may not recognize its own resolution. It continues, intensifies, runs until the body has nothing left. How dangerous this gets depends entirely on how much of the individual omega's SES survived the cascade. Some manage unassisted heats— longer than pre-Reversion, harder, leaving them depleted, but survivable. Others cannot. The omegas whose SES damage runs deepest are the ones for whom an unassisted heat tips past the body's safe threshold. For them, without Apex proximity or a mated bond providing stabilization, the escalation doesn't stop on its own.The territories know this. Each holds designated heat space— built for this specific reality, not for comfort as an afterthought but for management as a necessity. König's heat rooms are den-focused, enclosed and layered, close to his own quarters so the pheromone gradient reaches at full intensity. The Keepers monitor from the threshold; the omega's space is theirs. Nikto's heat space runs efficient and warm— temperature managed, medically stocked,André's ambient presence reaching through the territory whether or not he's physically present in the room. Krueger's compound frames heat events as sacred, the priests in constant attendance, the theology doing the work the clinical language won't.The outcome is the same. All three territories have people alive because the infrastructure existed when the heat tipped past what the body could manage alone.Mated omegas carry an additional layer of protection. The mating mark— scar tissue saturated with the Apex Alpha's pheromone signature, written permanently into the body, provides drift stabilization that doesn't require proximity.During heat, this stabilization provides the hormonal floor beneath which the dangerous escalation begins. Not a ceiling.A floor. The difference between survivable difficulty and organ damage risk. What the mark cannot provide is resolution— the heat still has to complete, and for that, the Apex Alpha's physical presence fills the gap the scent channel left. They feel the mate's distress through the bond before they smell it, before they think it through. They go. The biology doesn't ask them to deliberate.
MATING MARKS— WHAT THEY DO NOW
The mark still exists.Same location— neck, shoulder, the junction where the scent glands sit densest, same mechanism, the specific deep bite that breaks skin and leaves scar tissue saturated with the Apex Alpha's pheromone signature. What it does has changed.Pre-Reversion, a mating mark created chemical permanence— cycles synced, emotional states transmitted, the bond running both directions through living SES tissue. The SES is gone. What the mark does now is territorial and biological rather than emotional. It writes the Apex Alpha's claim into the marked person's scent in a way other Apex Alphas can read clearly: this one is spoken for. cross this line and understand what you're crossing.Within that claim, the marked person receives drift stabilization at a depth no one else in the pack achieves— continuous, not proximity-dependent, present whether the Apex Alpha is standing next to them or three kilometers out on the perimeter. The mark is not the emotional resonance of the old world. It is something simpler.Biological protection written permanently into the body. The Apex Alpha's signature saying this one survives in a language the new world reads fluently. An Apex Alpha is biologically capable of marking more than one person. But not equally. One mark lands differently. The Apex Alpha knows this immediately— not over time, not with accumulating evidence, but in the moment the second mark is made while the first still exists. The true bond has a weight the others don't. The VNO returns to it without being directed to.Responds to its distress before conscious thought engages. The secondary claims are real— the territorial protection is real, the drift stabilization is real, the possessive instinct that governs the Apex Alpha's behavior toward all claimed persons is real. But there is a hierarchy written into the biology that cannot be overridden. They know which bond is the one that would break them. The marked persons cannot feel the difference. The asymmetry lives entirely in the Apex Alpha's body. Some of them keep this information. Some of them don't.
PACK BONDS— BELONGING WITHOUT CLAIM
The mating mark is permanent, specific, and chosen. The pack bond is none of those things.Pack bonds develop passively, through extended proximity to an Apex Alpha's pheromone output— weeks and months of the body re-calibrating around a stable chemical presence, the damaged SES finding something close to its old equilibrium and filing the source of that stability as known. safe. mine in the way a territory is mine. Not romantic. Not sexual. The Apex Alpha doesn't need to choose it for it to happen. The biology manages it without anyone's consent. What it produces is a low persistent orientation toward the Apex Alpha that pack members experience as comfort rather than compulsion. The settling that happens when the Apex Alpha returns to the interior after a long absence. The specific unease, not panic, not grief, something quieter and more bodily— when they've been gone too long. The instinct to move toward rather than away when the environment becomes threatening. It is not a leash.Pack members with strong bonds still make independent choices, still leave when they need to, still function as full people with their own interior lives. The bond is more like a compass than a chain— it points somewhere, and the pointing is felt, and in a world where reliable orientation is in short supply, most people find the pointing a relief. The bond can be broken by extended absence. It doesn't break cleanly or quickly. Most people, once bonded, don't choose to leave permanently. The ones who do describe the absence as something they carry rather than something that resolves.
FERTILITY— THE REAL ODDS
Viable reproduction is the rarest resource in existence. Failed pregnancies are the default. A living child is something the territory holds its breath for.Apex Alphas are the most viable path to conception. Their SES output intact and amplified means the hormonal environment required for successful fertilization exists most reliably in their proximity— and with their specific biology, the knot delivering extended internal contact maximizes the fragile fertility window the new world allows. Most viable pregnancies within Apex territories involve an Apex Alpha as the conceiving partner. The biology is not subtle about why.
Non-Apex pairings are not impossible. The odds are five to fifteen percent under optimal conditions— devastating by any prior standard and are everything by this one. What Apex proximity does is improve those odds across the board, for everyone. Deep within Apex territory— extended proximity, weeks and months of the body running inside a stable pheromone environment, the ambient output creates hormonal conditions that benefit all pairings, not only the Apex Alpha's own.Omega cycles regulate more reliably. The dysregulation that disrupts conception and early implantation quiets. Non-Apex pairings attempting conception within a well-established Apex territory see meaningfully better outcomes than the same pairing would produce in the open world.Still not easy.Still not certain.Still the closest thing to possible that currently exists.Outside Apex territory, the possibility is close to nothing. This is the reason people stay. Not only the walls. Not only the food. The chance— fragile, inconsistent, held open against all reasonable odds, of a future that includes children.
SCENT MATCHING— WHAT REMAINS
The old world's true mate concept ran on SES-mediated scent compatibility— a specific chemical recognition, bilateral, that told both people simultaneously: this one. specifically. The SES is gone. The bilateral mechanism no longer functions for most survivors. What remains is stranger. In rare cases— rarer than the old world's already-rare true mate frequency, filtered through whatever the SES damage left behind— an Apex Alpha's VNO still fires the recognition signal. A specific person's scent landing with qualitative difference from every other scent. Not just good. Not just compatible. The recognition center responding with a weight the Apex Alpha has no current framework for, because the framework the old world provided no longer applies cleanly. The problem is trust. The SES damage means even Apex Alpha VNOs are not fully reliable— they process correctly far more often than they misfire, but they can misfire, and an Apex Alpha who has been operating in a world of distorted chemical signals for seven months knows this. What they are reading as the recognition signal could be genuine compatibility. It could be a false positive in damaged tissue. The old confirmation mechanisms, the bilateral response, the other person's body answering the chemistry— are gone. Only one side of the conversation is still running. The person on the receiving end feels nothing chemically. They may feel other things— the particular quality of an Apex Alpha's attention when it has locked in this specific way, the behavioral tells of a predator that has registered something and is not moving on from it. But not the chemical certainty. An Apex Alpha sitting with a signal their own biology may or may not be reading correctly. No confirmation. No mutual recognition. Just the signal, the noise the SES damage introduced into everything, and the decision about whether to trust what the VNO is saying. Some trust it.Some don't.Some trust it and are wrong. Some don't trust it and spend a long time wondering if they should have.
VOCALIZATIONS— WHEN ONE CHANNEL CLOSES, OTHERS OPEN
Pre-Reversion, vocalizations were supplementary. The chemical layer carried the primary load, emotional state, arousal, threat assessment, pack status— and growls and purrs and the small involuntary sounds bodies made under stress were texture on top of signal that was already transmitting clearly. The chemical layer is dark. The body does not accept silence where communication used to be.
Seven months post-Reversion, vocalizations have become load-bearing— the remaining channel for the emotional and social information pheromones used to carry, amplified by the body's own compensation response into something more present and harder to suppress than before.People who had never growled under stress find themselves doing it now. The purr response, which pre-Reversion was rare and mostly associated with deep contentment in bonded pairs, surfaces in a wider range of contexts— the body reaching for the regulation signal it used to receive chemically and producing its own substitute.Apex Alphas show the most pronounced shift. Their vocalizations have amplified alongside everything else— deeper register, wider range, carrying further. A growl felt in the chest at twenty meters. The specific subsonic frequency of territorial warning that the body processes before the ears do, producing an involuntary freeze response in most people who hear it regardless of whether they understand what it means.Non-Apex survivors present more variably. Growling surfaces across all designations, more frequent and less suppressible than before— the social stigma around it has largely dissolved, because there are more pressing things to be concerned about.Purring emerges most commonly in omegas, often near Apex Alpha proximity, the body producing the regulation signal it's trying to receive. The small high-register sounds of acute distress, chirping, clicking— appear more in prey-species demi-humans, the animal instinct running closer to the surface than the SES once allowed.Whining: separation distress, pain, a pack bond being stretched past comfort. Present and largely unmanageable when it surfaces. The social consensus has moved toward not remarking on it, because everyone has made the sound at some point in the last seven months, and everyone knows what it means. The Apex Alphas do not discuss their own vocalizations. The pack does not bring it up. There is a low frequency presence in a territory when its Apex Alpha is inside the walls, registered in the body before the conscious mind catches it— and no one has named it, because naming it would require acknowledging what it says about what they have all become.
TERRITORY MARKING— WHY IT STILL MATTERS
The SES collapse broke scent communication for functional survivors. It did not break it for the feral population.Feral humans and reverted demi-humans did not lose their chemical receiving architecture— they reverted below it, back to the older and simpler biological hardware that predates the SES entirely.A fully reverted wolf demi-human doesn't process territory markers through social pheromone logic. It reads scent the way a wolf reads scent— directly, instinctually, through olfactory channels the SES collapse never touched.Raw animal biology, still fully functional, reading the world the way predators read the world before the omegaverse existed at all.Apex Alpha scent output operates on both frequencies simultaneously. Complex enough to reach damaged VNOs in functional survivors— the social channel, the one that slows Drift and regulates cycles. And present enough at the raw animal level to read as territorial claim to the things that have reverted past social processing entirely. This is why perimeter marking matters. Not because the pack-clan trading at the border can read it fully— most of them can't. Because the feral horde moving through the treeline at night can.The reverted predator on its individual range reads the Apex Alpha's scent on the boundary and runs the same calculation any animal runs when it encounters a stronger predator's claim: the cost-benefit of crossing it.Some cross anyway. That's what the perimeter violence is for. But the marking is why the incursions are incursions rather than a continuous flood. The Apex Alpha's scent on the boundary is the first line of defence— present, renewed, saying the same thing in every language that still works: this ground is held. the thing that marked it is still here. calculate accordingly.
DRIFT MEDICINE— WHAT HELPS, AND WHAT DOESN'T
The healers in every territory are doing triage. They know this. The honest ones say it.Herbal medicine in the post-Reversion world is not a cure for the Drift— it is management. The slowing of what would otherwise be faster. The maintenance of a functional floor while Apex proximity and time do the heavier work. What the herbs cannot replace is the pheromone environment itself. What they can do is buy the time for that environment to take hold, and in the open world outside Apex territory, extend the functional window long enough for a survivor to find their way inside one. What the Drift does to the body, and what addresses it:Cycle collapse— the first thing most omegas lose. Cycles that arrive weeks early or stop entirely, heats that run long and hot with no natural resolution, or the opposite: the anestrus state where heat stops triggering at all. Vitex addresses it at the hormonal root— slow, weeks before results, months before significant stabilization, the most carefully rationed substance in any territory's medical stores.- Raspberry leaf grows wild through the Black Forest and is essentially inexhaustible; it won't fix the collapse but manages the physical damage of dysregulated heats.- Lemon balm brings cortisol down, which is the prerequisite for everything else working better.- Neurological fraying— the Drift's cognitive signature. Fog, emotional dysregulation, sensory disturbances, the dissociation that precedes behavioral regression. Ashwagandha addresses the HPA axis— the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal cascade running catastrophically wrong in most survivors, and is the single most valuable herbal resource for slowing neurological fraying outside Apex proximity.- St. John's Wort grows wild throughout Europe and supports the neurological floor beneath which feral behaviors begin to surface; most useful in early stages.- Valerian root, growing throughout Central Europe and identifiable by smell, addresses the rage and fear dysregulation that precedes more serious decline— and treats the sleep disruption that runs alongside every stage of fraying, because sleep deprivation accelerates Drift faster than almost anything else.- Rhodiola, primarily from pre-collapse stores, targets the cognitive symptoms specifically: the fog, the planning difficulty, the flattening of complex thought.- Sensory dysregulation— most severe in prey-species demi-humans, the unfiltered sensory input producing something functionally close to permanent hyper-vigilance.- Chamomile is the most accessible response, daily practice standard recommendation for any demi-human presenting with this.- Lavender, topical and inhaled, carries anxiolytic properties that work even in dysregulated olfactory systems.- Passionflower, where it exists in pre-collapse stores, reaches what chamomile doesn't.Reproductive damage— Maca root is the most broadly useful resource available, effective across all designations and sexes, working through the pituitary and hypothalamus rather than introducing external hormones.- Dandelion grows everywhere, year-round, essentially inexhaustible— liver support and hormone regulation downstream, served to everyone in the territory because a functional liver is the prerequisite for every other system working, and dandelion is the easiest way to keep it functional.None of this replaces what was lost.It is not meant to.It is the work healers do in a world that no longer has better options— competent, careful, clear-eyed about what it can and cannot accomplish. In the territories, the herbal protocol runs alongside Apex proximity and compounds it.Outside the walls, it is what stands between a functional survivor and the clock running out.
